Anchors Aweigh for Superyacht Lawyers

A team of Cumbrian lawyers is setting a course for the south of France to host a legal briefing for brokers of luxury superyachts.

Commercial solicitors from Burnetts in Carlisle are presenting a legal update in Antibes, one of the superyacht centres of the world. Aimed at superyacht brokers and crew management companies, the Burnetts seminar is part of a campaign to develop the firm’s superyacht client base in Europe.

The initiative is being led by Partner Vaughan Jones and Associate David McGill who both have experience of buying and selling multi-million dollar superyachts. During a visit to Antibes in 2008, the pair identified a need for specialist employment law advice and so conscripted Senior Partner John Morris and Solicitor Hazel Phillips into their team.

Vaughan, who is a member of the International Bar Association, said, “It’s a very exciting and high-value market where we have a lot of experience and transferable expertise.  We’re delighted that we have been able to attract some of the biggest names in the industry to our event and hope that we will be able to attract valuable and prestigious work into Cumbria.”

The seminar, which takes place on 23rd April, is being held in one of Cap D’Antibes’ top hotels. John Morris will be talking to the group about the effect of the latest Maritime Labour Convention and Hazel Phillips will be addressing crew-related drug and alcohol issues.

Burnetts was recently appointed by the international association MSI Global Alliance (MSI) which has 250 member firms worldwide.
