If you use goods vehicles in conjunction with a trade or business you should consider the following:

  • You are required by law to have an "operators licence".
  • The licence must specify the operating centre, ie the place where the vehicle is usually kept.
  • A fleet insurance policy should cover each and every driver using the fleet.
  • If the vehicle is used by an employee out of hours the employer must spell out the purposes for which the vehicle can be used and ensure this is enforced.
  • There are special training regulations in respect of different types of goods vehicles.
  • Health & Safety requirements eg guidance rules for the employment and training of Fork Lift truck drivers.
  • Maintenance of vehicles - employers will be liable even where the vehicle is mainly driven or looked after by an employee.
  • Loading of vehicles.
  • There are specific controls over loading and employees must be aware of these in detail.
