Douglas started his legal career in articles with Carlisle City Council, where he gained extensive knowledge of the workings of local government.  He joined Burnetts in 1974 and became a partner in 1979.

Throughout his career Douglas has specialised in planning matters, where he enjoys a regional reputation.  He has represented clients on numerous planning inquiries, both large and small, as well as dealing with a complete range of planning issues.  He also advises and represents local authorities on planning issues and inquiries.

He has represented a number of local authorities on appeals against the refusal of planning permission for wind turbines.  He has a particular interest in renewable energy projects. 

Douglas is a member of the Law Society's specialist Planning Law Accreditation Scheme, admission to which is strictly controlled.  He is the only solicitor in Cumbria, and one of the few in private and public practice in the Northern region, admitted to membership of this specialist scheme.
