Charity Telethon for Emma

A trainee legal executive from Carlisle is travelling to Manchester twice each month to work as a volunteer for a national charity.

Emma Hetherington lives in Carlisle and is one of the six-strong medical law team at Burnetts Solicitors. She is currently commuting to the centre of Manchester to work on the busy telephone helpline of the charity Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA ).

Emma, who has been specially trained by the charity for her role, is helping callers from across the north of England with problems relating to clinical negligence. 

She said, “The work is very interesting and varied with a steady stream of calls throughout the day although the problems are often not as serious as the ones I see at Burnetts. Most often, the callers I have spoken to need help with the NHS complaints procedure. It’s very rewarding to be in a position to be able to offer a wide range of support through AvMA .”

Callers who need in-depth legal advice are referred to solicitors who have been specially accredited by AvMA . Burnetts has the only two AvMA approved solicitors in Cumbria in Vicki Jagger and Ruth Keenleyside.

AvMA is an independent charity which promotes better patient safety and justice for people who have been affected by a medical accident.
