John Morris

Senior Partner

John Morris is the elected Senior Partner of Burnetts. As Head of Burnetts Employment department, he leads the largest specialist employment team in Cumbria and North Lancashire.

John acts for a number of large corporate, charitable and quasi-public clients throughout England and Scotland.  He was a founder member of the well-respected Employment Lawyers’ Association and in the independent guide to solicitors, known as “The Legal 500”, he is referred to as “a highly respected authority on employment law who is “prompt, supportive and highly professional””.

John’s employment work takes him far beyond the county boundaries and he has had cases covering the length and breadth of the country from Inverness to Exeter and Caernarfon to Norwich (with Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds, Nottingham and London in between).  John has an enviable record in Tribunal advocacy having lost only four cases since 1978: two of which were subsequently won on appeal.

As well as his contentious practice in the Tribunals, John has a significant involvement in non-contentious employment matters including the production of service agreements, employment contracts and policies and procedures relating to such matters as health and safety, equal opportunities, discipline, redundancy, grievance and e-mail/Internet use.

John’s pre-eminence in his field has been recognised by national external appointments. In 2007, he was appointed Chairman of the Law Society’s influential Employment Law Committee which, amongst other things, advises the Government upon the implications of proposed legislation and general employment law issues.
