David Gibson, a member of the Employment team here at Burnetts is based in both Newcastle and Carlisle. David is unique in that he can recognise employment problems in a business context and therefore works both with his own employment specific clients and also collaboratively with our Corporate, Dispute Resolution, Commercial Property and Leisure & Tourism departments to provide a holistic service for their clients. David is a well-known figure in the business communities in Cumbria, Newcastle and the North East and is sought after for his opinions on hot topic employment issues such as the changing relationship between employers and employees. David regularly speaks at events in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, Cumbria Tourism and the Chartered Institute of Personal Development (CIPD) as well as on BBC radio segments and in local press.

David is originally from the North East and trained and worked in London advising a range of clients from major trade unions to leading media organizations including The Wireless Group, Channel 4 and The Guardian. David specialises in corporate transactions and has experience of dealing with trade union issues; he also provides updates and teaches on emerging legislation and equality issues. David is approachable and adaptable; he works with a wide range of clients in different industries, company structures and career levels and is able to speak everyone’s language. In his career he has worked for PLC’s, SME’s and large regional employers, so he has covered most of the challenges companies in the North East will be facing. David also has a breadth of experience in cases involving mental health issues both from an employer and employee standpoint.

David has a fantastic team who adopt a proactive and commercial approach to the provision of legal advice; each of our employment solicitors have broad ranging expertise and have their own specialism meaning the team can support each other in providing a comprehensive service for their clients. Sharon Ridley holds a key role as the client liaison officer and is the first person our clients speak to; she also directs the work flow within the team to make sure cases are moving along in a timely fashion. Our Senior Associate Anna Lovett has a particular expertise in equality issues, has outstanding client relationship skills and is an emerging thought leader on developments in employment law, solicitor Jack Mitchell specialises in corporate issues, in a practical and timely manner and our HR consultant Kristina O’Donnell offers HR support to a wide range of businesses. The team also receives support from up-and-coming trainee solicitor Alex Donaldson.

The dynamics of the team and their fresh perspective allows them to offer a different kind of service to the Newcastle market that is unlike the one size fits all approach offered by their large regional competitors; the team are actively working alongside a number of organisations to support businesses in the area and aim to bring their proactive, practical approach to an expanding range of clients in the area.
