Moving back ‘home’
Solicitor Megan Richardson explains why she moved to Burnetts, 3 years after qualifying as a solcitor in the North-East.
I completed my Training Contract in November 2013 with Swinburne Maddison LLP in Durham and qualified into their Commercial Property and Agricultural team where I continued to work for 3 years PQE.
After growing up in Cumbria, I had a desire to move back ‘home’ after spending several years studying, working and living in the North East.
Why did I move to Burnetts?
After deciding to relocate back to Cumbria, I was eager to work for Burnetts. I knew that it was one of the biggest firms in the area and had a well-established, expert Agricultural Department which I wanted to work within as I am from a farming/rural background. In addition, the firm also specialised in Commercial Property work which I had previously practised in, so there would be an opportunity to specialise in two areas of particular interest to me, rather than taking a role which might cover a wider range of practice areas.
What was the recruitment process like?
There was no vacancy advertised when I applied to Burnetts, however, they were keen to discuss my situation and my desire to move back to Cumbria. The interview process was informal and relaxed, and appointments were flexible and made with minimum disruption to my day as I will still working in the North East.
My initial interview was held with the Managing Partner and the Head of Property, and then a second interview was held with two members of the Commercial Property and Agricultural team. Although the second interview was geared around the more technical and legal aspects of the role, it was relaxed and felt like more of an informal chat than a formal interview.
Burnetts were efficient in their job offer process and there was no ‘hanging around’. Before I knew it I was at my induction!
The induction process was comprehensive and held at the Head Office, where I had a tour and was introduced to all members of staff.
Life at Burnetts
My colleagues are friendly and supportive and I work in an environment where it is never a problem to ask a question or discuss a particular point if another opinion is required.
I wanted a firm which could also offer progression as my career develops and this is something that is an option within Burnetts. Both our department and the firm as a whole are proactive and progressive which creates a fantastic working environment, in which we are encouraged to get involved and is enjoyable to be a part of.
All in all, moving to Burnetts has been a great decision for me. It has allowed me to continue specialising in the practice areas I enjoy along with a great team of people with a like-minded enthusiasm for the work they do.
