Work Experience Scheme

Take the first steps in your legal career at Burnetts Solicitors.

Work Experience

Burnetts is one of the most prominent solicitors’ practices in the North.  Its departments encompass corporate and commercial litigation, personal injury, clinical negligence, family law, residential conveyancing, agriculture, construction & engineering and probate.

The firm continues to expand from their strong company and commercial base while retaining and developing strength in niche areas such as employment, planning and education related work.

Recruitment

The firm, almost three times larger than any other in Carlisle, has a policy to ensure a constant supply of top quality lawyers.  Its recruitment policy extends to trainee recruitment through a system of selective work experience for students who have the ability and ambition to develop a successful career in law.

Work Experience Scheme

First Year

Each year Burnetts select up to three candidates from Year 12 students, who have either already decided on a legal career or who have serious ambitions in respect of the law but have yet to make up their mind.  Selection is by way of a recommendation from the candidate’s school plus a selection interview.

Successful candidates will receive a £25.00 book token and will spend one week shadowing in the Burnetts office at a time convenient to both parties usually during the school summer holiday period.  The week will include an introduction to the firm and experience in at least five of the firm’s departments.

In the following September, Burnetts will select those who will progress on to Year Two of the scheme.

Year Two

Up to two of the Year 12 students will receive a further £25.00 book token and will be invited for further work experience during Year 13.

Year Three

Following a further review, Burnetts will provide paid summer holiday work to selected students at their offices for those candidates who have progressed to a law course at university.

Successful candidates will progress to possible sponsorship in their later years at university and the acquisition of a Training Contract with Burnetts.

Appilcations for 2017 are now closed. If you are interested in applying for 2018 please submit a letter of application and CV to your school contact. The closing date for receipt of all applications is Friday 23rd February 2018.  Applications will be shortlisted and only a select few students will be invited to attend the firm for interview.
