CIPD Cumbria: Brexit in Cumbria, Gains, Losses & Dilemmas
In CIPD's next event, a line up of expert speakers look at the likely effects of Brexit on Cumbria and on the wider HR profession.
This CIPD event will explore the complexity of the UKs exit from the EU with guest speakers from the Home Office, Cumbria LEP, the education sector and much more on the day.
Special guest and keynote speaker at the conference is Peter Cheese, Chief Executive of CIPD, who will be taking you through the views of CIPD on the exit from the European Union and the potential impact on the HR profession.
Compering the event is Nigel Crebbin, Partner at Burnetts.
Registration is from 8.30am, with the session starting at 9am. Lunch will be provided.
The first 60 tickets will be priced at £40 so please book your place early to avoid disappointment. Ticket prices after this number has been reached will be £65.

Peter is the chief executive of the CIPD, the professional body for more than 150,000 HR and people development professionals around the world. He writes and speaks widely on the development of HR, the future of work, and the key issues of leadership, culture and organisation, people and skills.
Peter is a visiting Professor at the University of Lancaster, and sits on the Advisory Board of Bath University School of Management. He holds honorary doctorates from Bath University, Kingston University, and is a Fellow of the CIPD, AHRI (the Australian HR Institute) and the Academy of Social Sciences. He’s also a Companion of the Institute of Leadership and Management, the Chartered Management Institute, and the British Academy of Management.
Prior to joining the CIPD in July 2012, he was Chairman of the Institute of Leadership and Management and a member of the Council of City&Guilds. Up until 2009 he had a long career at Accenture holding various leadership positions and culminating in a seven year spell as Global Managing Director for the firm’s human capital and organisation consulting practice.
Nigel Crebbin is a Partner in the Employment Law & HR team at Burnetts and has primary responsibility for the firm’s commercial clients.
Nigel joined Burnetts in 2017 after more than 10 years as a Partner across several respected Greater Manchester law firms.
A graduate of Cambridge University, he is a highly practised legal expert with over 22 years’ experience in employment law. Nigel is skilled in helping businesses spot potential issues at an early stage and resolving them head-on before they become problematic.
His particular expertise is with the private, commercial sector, in which he gives clear and straightforward advice on issues including business sales, equality and diversity, re-organisations and redundancies, disciplinary issues, performance and absence management and employment contracts and policies. He has a particular interest in business transfers.
Nigel is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and the Employment Lawyers’ Association and also speaks French to a high standard.
Professor Frank Peck - University of Cumbria
Frank is the Director of the Centre for Regional Economic Development, He conducts research on regional economies and provides consultancy services for external agencies and organisations involved in local and regional development. He will be joined by Nicola Longland, BAE Systems - Head of Talent and Resourcing for Maritime and Michelle Leek University of Cumbria - Pro Vice Chancellor (Director of Student & Staff Services)
David Nicholson - Group HR Director James Cropper plc
Group HR Director of James Cropper plc with more than 25 years’ experience in HR and Communications roles. He joined James Cropper as HR Manager in 2009, was appointed Head of HR in 2013, and became an Executive Team member the following year. David was appointed Group HR Director in 2016.
David has significant experience in all areas of HR, especially performance management, learning and development, organisational development, employee relations and communications.
He has played a key role in growing the James Cropper business in terms of turnover, profit, and number of people employed both in south Cumbria and overseas.
David has driven a whole series of positive changes at the Burneside site covering areas such as reward and recognition, employee engagement, employee relations, recruitment and communications.
He also chairs the annual pay talks for the UK paper industry, and is a founder member
of the North West Employee Engagement Group (NWEEG).
David enjoys most sports, particularly horse racing, and is an avid Chelsea fan!
