Our work for Project Tullie…
Our Commercial Property team is very proud to be involved in the long-term redevelopment programme for Tullie Museum – Project Tullie.
Project Tullie is the museum’s major capital redevelopment programme, reimagining the museum as a more welcoming, inclusive and community-centred space for Carlisle, Cumbria and beyond.
The vision is to create a museum that better reflects the diverse stories of the region, improves access to collections, and supports long-term sustainability through phased investment and transformation.
Phase 1, completed in 2021, saw the reopening of two restored Victorian galleries to house The Costume Collection, showcasing the museum’s nationally significant textile and fashion holdings.
Phase 2, completed in 2025, delivered a new accessible entrance, atrium, shop, café, and the Carlisle Gallery – a space celebrating the city’s unique identity.
Phase 3, now underway with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, will transform the Border Galleries, opening up over 100,000 collection items to the public and adding a dedicated learning studio. Further phases are in development to realise the full vision of Project Tullie.
Amy Walker, Head of Strategy and Capital Programme at Tullie said:
“Working with Burnetts through our major capital development programme has made a complex project feel much more manageable. The team are committed, responsive and genuinely care about the work Tullie is doing. Having them on board helped bring the recently completed Phase 2 of Project Tullie to fruition. Working on the next phase, we are already receiving the same excellent level of service and look forward to doing so as the project progresses.”
Helen Hayward, our Commercial Property Partner, said:
“Working on Project Tullie has been such a pleasure for the Burnetts Team. Those of us who have grown up knowing Tullie, or sharing its spaces with our younger generation will know that it has always been a special place. But its transformation during Project Tullie has been nothing short of fantastic. It has been a privilege to work with the amazing Tullie team and we can’t wait to see what’s next!”
