In amongst all of the furore about the introduction of shared parental leave, employers shouldn’t forget that as of 5th April, changes were also made to the old parental leave scheme. 

This is the scheme under which employees can take up to 18 weeks of unpaid leave. 

Under the old rules, the leave had to be taken before the child’s 5th birthday or before the child’s 18th birthday in the case of a disabled child.  However, as of 5th April, unpaid parental leave can be taken at any time before the child’s 18th birthday whether the child has a disability or not.  Leave must still be taken in blocks of a week, 18 weeks can be taken per child but no more than four weeks can be taken in any year under the statutory scheme.
