InfoLawUpdate - Changes to Individual Electoral Registration
Burnetts' information law solicitor Natalie Ruane discusses changes to the individual electoral registration.
Many of you will have recently received a letter from your local council explaining the change to individual registration for voters in England and Wales.
Under the old arrangements, people were required to choose every year whether to opt out of the open version of the electoral register. This summarised version of the register is the version that councils can sell to third parties. Under the new arrangements, decisions will be made by each individual and their decision will be respected until they decide to change that choice.
Further details about this change can be found on the Electoral Register Registration page of the gov.uk website. The ICO welcomed this change. Its views were that it will give individuals a greater say over how their information can be used.
