Lawyers from Cumbria’s Burnetts are going back to school to deliver a new HR support service for schools.

Lawyers from Cumbria’s Burnetts are going back to school to deliver a new HR support service for schools.

The law firm, which has offices in Cockermouth, Carlisle, Penrith and Newcastle, has launched a new, fixed-price HR support service for schools. Eight schools have already signed up.

One of the first schools to buy into the new service was St Benedict’s Catholic High School in Whitehaven. The school’s Business Manager Mrs Mary Lowrey said, “Schools need expert support from people who can react quickly to urgent needs and be proactive in helping us to manage both student- and staff- related issues.  Since we moved our HR and legal provision to Burnetts, the quality of the advice and support has been  excellent; this applies to simple requests for a review of a key letter to more complex issues including preparation for tribunals and supporting the work of the Governing Body.”

The idea for the new HR Support Service came from Partner Natalie Ruane. She said, “We felt there was a gap in the HR provision for schools which we could fill with a fixed price service, provided by experts who have an in-depth knowledge about HR in the sector. The response so far has been extremely promising.  Many Heads and Business Managers had told me that they needed accessible and experienced day to day support as much as they needed someone at their sides if staff issues become challenging. We don’t just provide expert advice on employment and education law, but we get involved in a practical, hands-on way too.

Natalie continues, “Added to this is the increasing pressure on schools to make their budgets work harder whilst the growth in the number of academies has shifted the mind-set in schools and Heads: whether academies or not, Heads are increasingly taking control of how their money is spent. This is a service we are delivering across Cumbria. ”

Burnetts is nationally recognised for its expertise in education law: as well as advising on more than half of Cumbria’s academy conversions; the firm advises schools throughout the North; is ranked as one of the top five law firms in England and Wales for its advice to the further education sector and has more than 20 years’ experience in the Higher Education sector. More than 20 solicitors in the firm are employed on education-related contracts. It is expected that new jobs will be created as the HR service client base grows.
