Burnetts’ solicitor is new Law Society President

Solicitor Nick Gutteridge, Head of Private Client Services at Burnetts in Carlisle, Penrith & West Cumbria is the new President of Carlisle and District Law Society.

Solicitor Nick Gutteridge, Head of Private Client Services at Burnetts in Carlisle is the new President of Carlisle and District Law Society.

Nick, a solicitor for almost 25 years, was elected at the Society’s Annual General Meeting on Monday 13th May. He succeeds Claire Davies from Cartmell Shepherd.

The Carlisle and District Law Society has more than 200 members including solicitors and trainee solicitors from Carlisle, Penrith and Wigton.

Nick has been on the committee of the local Law Society since 2012 and was previously the organisation’s Vice President. His aims for his year of office include building links with the Law Society at a national level and consulting with the profession on what support is needed to help solicitors through the challenging and changing times currently being faced.

He said, “A strong local society is a great resource for the profession, providing opportunities for solicitors to meet together and to potentially tap into the lobbying capabilities of the national organisation as well as being involved in legal developments. It’s very important to have that representative body.”

“My focus for the coming year will be on building links with the regional and national levels of the Law Society so that local solicitors have a greater voice. Cuts to legal aid, increased competition, regulatory changes and the state of the economy are all contributing to a high level of uncertainty and negativity in the profession, so listening to local solicitors and communicating their concerns will be essential.”

Nick has been nationally recognised for his expertise in catastrophic personal injury. He is recommended in the latest edition of the Legal 500 and also Chambers and Partners (both prestigious guides to the legal industry) in which he is described as “bright, sensible, focused, highly experienced....and with a real personal touch”. A lawyer who has settled many major, multi-million pound claims, Nick is accredited as a Senior Litigator by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and is a member of the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s Personal Injury Accreditation Scheme. He is also Treasurer of Headway South Cumbria and Secretary of the Northern Acquired Brain Injury Forum.

He lives near Appleby with his wife and three children.

Note to editor: The objectives of Carlisle & District Law Society are to support the reputation and interests of member solicitors, to promote and maintain good practice, to assist in the conciliation of disputes quickly and informally, and to consider and act upon questions affecting the profession at large and in particular the solicitors in the Carlisle and District Area.
