Lawyers from around Cumbria will be joining forces in September to raise money for the North West Legal Support Trust in Cumbria’s first ever Legal Walk.

The Legal Walk is a regular fixture in cities around England, including Manchester & London, but this is the first time the event has taken place in Cumbria.

The 5k sponsored walk will start at 5.30pm on Thursday 27th September 2012, setting off from the Citadel and ending at the Sportsman Inn on Blackfriars Street in the city.

The North West Legal Support Trust (NWLST) is a grant-making charity, formed in 2009, which enables the provision of free legal advice to members of the public who would otherwise be disadvantaged. The Trust also supports charitable work that promotes access to justice: Cumbria Law Centre is one of the organisations which has benefited from grants from the NWLST.

As well as a local judge, solicitors from Cumbria County and South Lakeland District Councils and lawyers from the Cumbria Law Centre, the walk is being enthusiastically supported by Carlisle & District Law Society and its members. President Claire Davies said, “We’re really pleased to be taking part in Cumbria’s first ever Legal Walk and hope that this will be the first of many such events.  At a time of deep cuts to legal aid and to the funding of community legal advice centres, it’s vital that we do our bit to ensure access to justice is not restricted to the wealthiest.   Lawyers from Cartmell Shepherd, Burnetts, Butterworths and Bendles will be there to raise money and I hope we can encourage others to take part too.”

The Cumbria Walk is being organised by Nicola Hartley, a solicitor at South Lakeland District Council. She said, “We need the legal community in Cumbria to come together to create teams of walkers and to raise sponsorship funds for the Trust: 2012 will be a difficult year for the people who rely on access to free legal advice. You can walk or run the course, we just need your time and enthusiasm to make the first Cumbria Legal Walk a success!”

Firms or individual lawyers who would like to take part can register by emailing Nicola Hartley. Donations can be made at www.virginmoneygiving.com/cumbrialegalwalk-carlisle.

Further information about the NWLST is available from www.nwlst.org.uk.
