A prestigious national guide to law firms has heaped praise on Cumbria firm Burnetts, describing the practice as “excellent on all fronts” and “outstandingly good all round”.

In the 2013 issue of the Legal 500, published today, the firm which has offices in Carlisle, Newcastle, Penrith and West Cumbria is top of the County rankings, receiving more top tier rankings than any other firm in Cumbria.

Burnetts is recognised for its expertise in 10 areas of law, including its top tier rankings in Corporate and Commercial, Commercial Litigation and Commercial Property. In league tables which include national firms from across Northern England, Burnetts is the only practice in Cumbria to be ranked in the specialist fields of Professional Negligence, Education and Clinical Negligence.

Every team in the firm’s business services division has been ranked and recommended: the commercial property team is recognised as “top class” with the commercial litigation team is described as “excellent on all fronts”.

As well as ranking teams overall, the Legal 500 also recommends individuals, based partly on feedback from their clients: Head of Dispute Resolution Patricia Hall is described as “exemplary” while Medical Law partners Vicki Jagger and Victoria Watson are praised for being “extremely conscientious and painstaking”. Head of Commercial Property Tony Lake is “fantastic”.

Nick Gutteridge is Burnetts’ Head of Private Client Services and President of the Carlisle and District Law Society. Described in this year’s guide as “exceptionally good” Nick said, “The legal landscape is increasingly competitive with new providers of legal services coming into the market-place each week. The Legal 500 is an opportunity to celebrate the many great and talented solicitors that we have in the profession and to demonstrate the value and support that qualified lawyers are bringing to their clients every day. I’m delighted to see the expertise of so many of the Burnetts’ team being recognised and, this year, I’m particularly struck by the warmth of the comments which have been made our clients and peers.”

Law firms are recommended by the Legal 500 on merit alone.
