Family man is new Law Society President

Family solicitor Simon Mortimer, a partner at Burnetts in Carlisle is the new President of Carlisle and District Law Society.

Simon, a solicitor for almost 30 years, was elected at the Society’s AGM on Monday 16th May. Claire Davies from Cartmell Shepherds will act as Vice President.

The Carlisle and District Law Society has more than 200 members including solicitors and trainee solicitors from Carlisle, Penrith and Wigton.

Simon has been on the committee of the local Law Society since 1993 and is the organisations’s former press officer. His aims for his year of office include engaging trainee solicitors through the Junior Lawyers Division and closer working with other professionals in the district.

He said, “A strong local society is a great resource for the profession, providing somewhere where solicitors and trainees can meet together and potentially tap into the lobbying capabilities of the national organisation as well as being involved in legal developments.”

My focus for the coming year will be on bringing us together through social events and through improving communication with members. I’d also like to work more closely with other associations of professionals such as local accountants or doctors. We have a lot to learn from each other.”

Simon has been nationally recognised  for his family law expertise. He is recommended in the latest issue of Chambers and Partners (a prestigious guide to the legal industry) where he is described as “a calmly powerful advocate,"  He is also Vice Chair of the Cumbria Family Justice Council, a member of the Law Society’s Children Law Accreditation Scheme a qualified collaborative lawyer and an accredited specialist member of Resolution.

He lives in Brampton with his wife and three children.
