Furness General Hospital Maternity Unit - March 2013
Clinical negligence specialist Vicki Jagger comments on recent news regarding the maternity unit at Furness General Hospital and NHS gagging orders as well as giving an update on the firm's ongoing cases.
Vicki Jagger is Head of Medical Law at Burnetts and a nationally recognised solicitor who specialises in obstetric and neonatal clinical negligence claims.
Vicki said, “More than 30 families have been in touch with us to express anxiety about some aspect of their treatment at the maternity unit of Furness General Hospital. Their concerns have covered a wide range of issues but there are common themes including cases which demonstrate poor clinical knowledge and skills. We are currently instructed in around a dozen cases, many of which are extremely serious and distressing involving neonatal and maternal deaths.”
She continued, “We welcome the recent news of an independent inquiry and hope that it will help to prevent avoidable deaths, as well as reassuring families that a thorough and transparent investigation has at last been carried out.”
“Today’s announcement that gagging orders will be prohibited in NHS compromise agreements is also welcome. I am hopeful that, in the future, we can look forward to a culture of candour in the NHS where practitioners will not be prevented from speaking up when they know there are issues of patient safety.”
Vicki is accredited by AvMa, the patient safety charity and is a member of the Law Society's specialist Clinical Negligence Panel.
