Furness General settles maternity unit claims

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust has settled a claim relating to deaths at its Furness General Hospital.

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust has settled a claim relating to deaths at its Furness General Hospital.

Carl Hendrickson began proceedings against the Trust in October 2011 following the deaths of his newborn son, Chester and wife Nittaya at Furness General Hospital’s maternity unit in 2008.

The case was due to be heard in the High Court next month, but earlier this month a six figure settlement was agreed.

Speaking after the settlement, Carl Hendrickson, 47, said “It is an immense relief to me and my family that this case has finally been resolved. I am grateful to Sally Hatfield QC, Vicki Jagger and everyone at Burnetts for their hard work and persistence, but disappointed it has taken the Trust so long to end this.”

Mr Hendrickson now plans to travel to Thailand with his son Conrad so that proper funerals can be held for Nittaya and Chester and they can be buried with Nittaya’s ancestors.

Mr Hendrickson is not giving any media interviews regarding this settlement.
