Growing corporate team’s new recruit

Burnetts has recruited a new solicitor to support its top ranking corporate team.

Melissa McManus has joined Burnetts from Cartmell Shepherd.

A Durham University law graduate, Melissa completed her Legal Practice Course at Northumbria University before qualifying as a corporate / commercial solicitor in 2013.

Melissa was attracted to Burnetts by the calibre of its corporate team and the quality of its work. She said, “With Michael Walby recently returning from Pinsent Masons and already well established in the business community, John Noctor and Vaughan Jones’ reputations and technical knowledge, Burnetts offers me an amazing opportunity to work with, and learn from, lawyers with real, in-depth expertise. It was an easy decision for me, and I am very enthusiastic about the plans for the team.”

As a full-time corporate lawyer, Melissa’s main area of work at Burnetts will be providing advice on general corporate and commercial matters, but she has a particular interest in working on the acquisition and disposal of companies, an area in which Burnetts has been particularly active.

Melissa continued, “I have always enjoyed the transactional aspects of company / commercial law. It is fast-paced and very satisfying to be able to deliver a tangible end-result to clients. The team is currently working on a number of important corporate transactions for Cumbrian businesses, with more in the pipeline, so the signs are positive that 2016 will be another very successful year.”

John Noctor, Head of the Corporate team added, “We are delighted that Melissa has joined the team – she is a fantastic recruit. The corporate team has completed a record number of transactions in 2015, and Melissa’s arrival will undoubtedly enable us to continue to build on that success. We are confident that Melissa will play a large part in our future”.

Originally from West Cumbria, Melissa attended St Benedict’s High School and Sixth Form in Whitehaven. She now lives in Carlisle with her husband Mark, who works for Nat West in Carlisle. A keen networker, Melissa has been a regular attendee at events hosted by Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, Carlisle Ambassadors and other events for local professionals. She is also a professional mentor for the University of Northumbria.
