Hard work pays off for thriving five

The hard work of five Cumbrian lawyers has been rewarded with promotion by Burnetts.

Associate Solicitors James Johnston, Helen Hayward and Robbie Mather have all been promoted to Senior Associate whilst Solicitor Joanne McKenzie and Chartered Legal Executive Kathryn Hill have been promoted to Associate.

James Johnston and Robbie Mather joined the firm as trainee solicitors in 2008 - both were recommended by the prestigious Legal 500 for the first time in 2015.

Robbie is a Commercial Property and Planning solicitor who specialises in the leisure and banking sectors and is also a director of Keswick Tourism Association. Robbie said, “It’s great to have the recognition for your hard work, but also to be part of the vision for the team going forward”

James is a litigation specialist who, at the same time as being promoted to Senior Associate, became Head of Dispute Resolution. He is a Governor at Carlisle College and Chair of Governors at Cummersdale Primary School.  James commented, “I’m really looking forward to running the Dispute Resolution team and helping to shape the department’s future.”

Both Carlisle locals, Robbie attended Austin Friars School and James attended Trinity School

Former fashion house lawyer Helen Hayward joined Burnetts in 2013. Originally from the North East, she spent more than five years as Senior Legal Counsel for British fashion brand Burberry, managing the legal affairs of the PLC’s global property portfolio. She continues to specialise in Commercial Property and is an expert on retail leases and pension investments with a brief to develop the team’s growth in these areas.  Helen, who lives in Carlisle, said “It’s exciting to be part of a growing firm and to know that you’ll be playing a leading role in developing new services and specialisms”

West Cumbrians Joanne McKenzie and Kathryn Hill are also property lawyers: Joanne McKenzie is an agricultural solicitor who has worked in her specialist area for more than eight years and Kathryn Hill is a conveyancing expert with over 17 years’ experience of the local housing market who is Team Leader of the firm’s residential conveyancing team.

Joanne is a member of the Agricultural Law Association and attended the former Stainburn School & Science College in Workington. She now lives in Carlisle. Joanne said, “It’s nice to get that recognition for your work and to feel that you’re a valued member of the team. I’m really happy to be part of such a cohesive and strong team.”

Kathryn attended the former Southfield School in Workington and lives in Bridgefoot. She said, “Coming to Burnetts has allowed me to progress to the next rung of my career and has been a brilliant move for me.  I am proud to be leading such a great team. ”

Speaking about the promotions, Partner and Head of Property Richard Miller said, “James, Helen, Robbie, Joanne and Kathryn have all made a massive contribution to the continued growth of Burnetts and helped the firm to enjoy an extremely successful 2015. These promotions are in recognition of their hard work, commitment and achievements. The partners are ambitious for future growth and having the right people in senior positions will help us to drive that growth and develop our specialist teams.”
