Burnetts has unveiled a programme of training events which aims to help HR professionals and line managers to minimise the business risks involved in managing people

The firm, which has offices in Carlisle, Cockermouth and Penrith, is running a series of eight seminars in Penrith which will address areas of high-risk to organisations such as restructuring projects, dismissals and managing underperformance. The risks to business of mishandling these areas include: reputational damage; time-consuming meetings, appeals and investigations; decreased productivity; and potentially expensive Employment Tribunal claims.

The training sessions will take place monthly at The Stoneybeck Inn, Penrith, starting on 19th May 2016 with “How to do an Investigation”. This session will be hosted by Burnetts’ HR Consultant Julie Davis and Employment Law Partner Natalie Ruane. Their focus will be on the role of the investigator, including tips on interviewing witnesses and advice on how to collect all the necessary information to avoid challenges to the process.

Future seminars will include “Dismissals: identifying and managing risk” on 23rd June and “Managing sickness absence” on 14th July. After the summer break, the programme resumes with “Tackling underperformance” on 15th September. There are then four further events planned for the remainder of the year: “Workplace trends and employment law update”; “Redundancy and restructuring: the pitfalls of managing change”; “Attracting and engaging staff” and “An Introduction to Data Protection”.

As well as speakers from Burnetts, some of the sessions will include experts in occupational health, change management and employee engagement.

Employment law Partner Natalie Ruane said, “The aim of these sessions is to provide focused and practical training for HR professionals and line managers. The sessions are full of real-life examples and all of our presenters have first-hand experience in their fields. Employment law and HR management is full of grey areas - these briefings will help managers to identify and evaluate risk so that they have a much clearer understanding of their options when faced with complex HR issues.”

Each of the events will take place from 9.30am to 11.30am at The Stoneybeck Inn in Penrith. The delegate rate is £15.00 VAT per delegate. Places can be reserved by ringing Suzanne Manuel on 01768 800855, emailing events@burnetts.co.uk or booking online via www.burnetts.co.uk/events
