Maternity Mistakes - Burnetts comments
Burnetts' Head of Medical Negligence and Serious Injury comments on the BBC’s story of mistakes and deaths in maternity services.
Angela Curran said, “I welcome the fact that Jeremy Hunt is now focussing on improving maternity services, but changes are long overdue.
In my work I see these same issues recurring again and again: fetal heart rates incorrectly measured or recorded; delays in emergency Caesareans; and delays in midwives requesting help from consultants– these are mistakes which are leading to baby deaths and to catastrophic and life-long disabilities for what should be healthy newborns.
One of the eight cases I have settled this year was for a 50 year old man from a Cumbrian family who suffered serious injuries at his birth. These are not new problems”
