A Cumbria solicitor has successfully gained accreditation from a national charity for her expertise in clinical negligence.
Victoria Watson, a partner in Burnetts’ medical law team, has been accredited to the specialist clinical panel by the charity Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA).Victoria is now one of only three accredited lawyers in Cumbria, joining her Burnetts colleagues Vicki Jagger and Angela Curran on the independent charity’s list of recommended solicitors.
Explaining the route to accreditation, Victoria said, “I knew that the process was rigorous and it is absolutely right that the solicitors AvMA recommends have been thoroughly vetted and meet the high standards required for panel membership. “
AvMA has played a prominent role in several high profile patient campaigns including lobbying for a “duty of candour” amongst medics and campaigning to keep legal aid for victims of medical accidents. The charity has also been a voice for Cumbrians in calling for an independent investigation into failings at University Hospitals Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.
Victoria, who is Carlisle born and bred, joined Burnetts in 2004 and works exclusively in medical law. She was made partner in 2008. Victoria has a particular specialism in high value cases relating to negligent orthopaedic treatment and also acts for clients who have suffered through the late diagnosis of cancers. She is currently acting for several women bringing claims against North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust for its mis-diagnosis or treatment of their breast cancer. She also frequently represents families within the inquest process.
She said, “As an organisation, AvMA really does serve the cause of victims of medical accidents. Their campaigning and the support they provide to patients have made a big difference to many families. The accreditation is an acknowledgement that Burnetts’ Medical Law team places clients at the centre of what we do and provides an extremely high quality of client care.”
AvMA runs a free and confidential medical accidents helpline on 0845 123 2352. Further information about the charity can be found at www.avma.org.uk. Further information on Burnetts’ medical law team can be found at the medical law pages.
