Prospects Booming at Burnetts

Burnetts has promoted two of its Senior Associates to Partner and rewarded six other lawyers with upward moves.

The Cumbrian law firm which has offices in Carlisle, Penrith, West Cumbria and Newcastle has appointed two new Partners in its Commercial Property & Planning team: Robbie Mather  and Helen Hayward became Partners on 1st January 2017.

An Accountancy and Law graduate from Carlisle, Robbie joined the firm as a trainee solicitor in 2008. A Commercial Property and Planning solicitor who specialises in the leisure and banking sectors, he is a director of Mitre Housing Association and in 2016, he was the only property lawyer in Cumbria to be recognised by the prestigious Chambers & Partners. He said, “I first came to Burnetts as a work experience so I’m genuinely thrilled to now become a Partner. I care about Burnetts, the people here and our clients so I’m really pleased to be given a leading role in the firm. I’m looking forward to being part of our continued growth and helping to develop new sectors like planning.”

Former fashion house lawyer Helen Hayward joined Burnetts in 2013. Originally from the North East, after training and working in private practice in the city of London, she spent more than five years as Senior Legal Counsel for British fashion brand Burberry, managing the legal affairs of the PLC’s global property portfolio. She continues to specialise in Commercial Property with a particular focus on landlord and tenant work and pension porfolios. She said “It is an exciting time at Burnetts and I’m immensely proud of the thriving commercial property team we have built up. I am committed to ensuring that not only do we provide the best service possible, but that also this is a great place to work – I think the two things go hand in hand. I’m looking forward to further developing my role inside and outside the firm”.

Elsewhere in the firm, Agribusiness Associates Diane Barnes and Joanne McKenzie were promoted to Senior Associate, as was Conveyancing Team Leader Kathryn Hill.

Meanwhile Chartered Legal Executives Sharon Dunstan and Anita Jobling from the Conveyancing team and Solicitor Lynne Hall from the firm’s Medical Negligence and Serious Injury team were promoted to Associate.

Speaking about the promotions, Managing Partner Nick Gutteridge said, “Helen and Robbie are part of one of the firm’s most successful teams which has seen a fantastic 43% increase in client instructions during 2016. Their promotion to Partner is recognition of the huge amount of commitment they have shown, their enthusiasm and their sheer hard work. Under their continued leadership, I have no doubt that our Commercial Property team is in safe hands for the years ahead and will continue to go from strength to strength.”

Burnetts has 15 Partners including Robbie and Helen.
