“Sound” and “Supportive” Burnetts Leads Cumbria’s Chambers Rankings

Following September’s top tier rankings in the Legal 500, Burnetts has been recognised by Chambers and Partners, a second prestigious guide to the legal profession.

In the 2016 edition of Chambers and Partners, published on 30th October, 11 Burnetts solicitors are recognised as Leaders in their Field: agricultural solicitor Diane Barnes (described as “exceptional”) and personal injury lawyer Sue Chappell are ranked for the first time. Chambers sources say of Sue, she “fights her corner”.

Chambers and Partners ranks law firms by region and by area of expertise. Six specialist teams at the Cumbria law firm are recognised including the “responsive and extremely knowledgeable” Corporate team which received a ranking in the Corporate / M&A - Lower Mid-Market category of the North West region and the Education team which is ranked UK–wide. Describing the education lawyers, Chambers says, "the advice is very sound and they are very supportive."

Nick Gutteridge, one of those named as a Band 1 Leader in their Field, is Burnetts’ Managing Partner. He said, “The legal profession is extremely competitive and so attaining a ranking is a genuine achievement. That our corporate team has been recognised in the North West region, competing against firms in Manchester and Liverpool is testament to the expertise of the team and its growing share of the corporate deals market.”

He added “Maintaining our national ranking in Education is a great accomplishment. Ultimately, the rankings are strongly influenced by client feedback so we’re extremely grateful to our very busy clients for taking time to talk to Chambers’ researchers.”

The solicitors recognised as Leaders in their Field are: Angela Curran, Vicki Jagger and Victoria Watson (clinical negligence); Richard Miller and Diane Barnes (agriculture); John Morris (employment); John Noctor and Vaughan Jones (corporate); Nick Gutteridge and Sue Chappell (personal injury) and Simon Mortimer (family).

The firm is ranked in the following categories: Agriculture and Rural Affairs (Band 1 – Carlisle and Surrounds); Clinical Negligence (Band 1 – Carlisle and Surrounds); Family and Matrimonial (Band 1– Carlisle and Surrounds); Personal Injury (Band 1 – Carlisle and Surrounds); Corporate / M&A – Lower Mid-Market (Band 3 – North West – the highest ranking in Cumbria); Education: Institutions - Higher and Further Education (Band 4 - UK Wide).
