Two recruits strengthen Family Law team

Two recent recruits to Burnetts are strengthening the practice’s Family Law team and reinforcing the benefits of a collaborative approach to family disputes

Born and bred in Brampton, Katie Wright has joined Burnetts as a Solicitor and she is based in Carlisle.  Katie has over 15 years of experience as a family law solicitor in north Cumbria and specialises in resolving arrangements for children after divorce and separation.  She is a member of Resolution and a qualified collaborative lawyer.

“I’m looking forward to working with the rest of the Family Law team at Burnetts” says Katie, “I know that they share my commitment to working collaboratively. Collaborative family law involves resolving disputes about finances or arrangements for children where a client, their ex-partner and their solicitors meet face to face to work through issues together.  I’m a big supporter of this alternative way of working and have seen real benefits as there’s usually much less acrimony and also less damage to already sensitive family relationships.”

Katie currently also offers her experience and expertise to a volunteering role as Treasurer of the Child Contact Centre in Carlisle, a safe place for children from separated families to meet other family members in a neutral environment.

The second new recruit is Vikki Porthouse who has joined the Family Law team as a Chartered Legal Executive and is based in Cockermouth at Burnetts’ West Cumbria office.  Vikki brings 12 years of experience, specialising in cases involving children and divorce cases, particularly the associated financial issues.

“Apart from my university studies in Edinburgh, I’ve always lived and worked in Cumbria,” says Vikki, “and being part of the Family Law team at Burnetts is already proving to be a fascinating role.  There are big challenges working with families under pressure but it’s also incredibly rewarding when issues are resolved and families can find ways to work together.”

Simon Mortimer is head of the Family Law team at Burnetts: “We’re recognised in the legal profession for our down-to-earth approach and wide experience in family law, and particularly our focus on collaboration,” says Simon.  “Bringing Katie into the team means we now have three collaborative lawyers and now that Vikki is permanently based in our Cockermouth office we can expand our service to our West Cumbrian clients”.
