Victoria Notman
Legal Director
Victoria is a Legal Director in the Employment and HR team, based in Carlisle.
Victoria has over 15 years’ experience as a specialist employment solicitor. Originally from Cumbria, she spent the majority of her legal career with commercial law practices in the Midlands and North Yorkshire before returning ‘home’ to Burnetts.
Victoria has a wealth of experience in advising both employers and individuals across the full spectrum of contentious employment issues, including those ‘sticky’ areas which often give rise to litigation such as: discrimination; whistleblowing; stress at work; TUPE and service provision changes; reorganisations and redundancies; varying terms and conditions of employment and enforcing restrictive covenants. Her employer clients have included large corporations, NHS Trusts, SMEs, and charitable organisations.
She is experienced in conducting employment tribunal litigation, from the initial presentation/defence of a claim, through to hearing or settlement. She is grounded and pragmatic in her approach, with the focus firmly on achieving her clients’ desired outcome in a commercially savvy and user-friendly way. She is ever mindful of the ‘cost’ of litigation for her clients, financially, practically and emotionally.
Victoria also offers an end-to-end service, from recruitment to termination, for her non-contentious work, including advice on: bespoke contracts of employment and staff handbooks; directors service agreements, directors duties and restraint of trade; managing disciplinary, capability and grievance procedures; compliance issues relating to working time, holiday pay and family-friendly rights; negotiating severance packages and securing settlement solutions.
Victoria is committed to getting to know her clients’ business issues inside-out, understanding their goals and working together as part of their team. She offers straight-talking, expert advice within a supportive and accessible dynamic; helping her clients to strive for the right solution for their particular problem in a practical and commercial way.
Victoria can also provide workplace training and seminars on topical and problematic areas of employment law, helping her clients’ managers and staff to understand their obligations, spot issues before they arise or nip them in the bud and manage them effectively from start to finish.
Victoria is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association. She speaks fluent Greek and in her spare time enjoys the fells and dales, yoga, a good book.
