Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day

Friday 15th May is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day (SCIAD). Burnetts Medical Negligence and Serious Injuries team are hoping to help raise awareness of the condition.

This annual event is organised by three of the main Spinal Cord Injuries charities: Spinal Injuries Association, Back Up and Aspire. Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day is all about raising awareness and understanding of the impact and effect of spinal cord injury told through the personal stories of those affected. This year’s theme is “spinal cord injury at any age”. A spinal cord injury can be life-changing at any age and stage of life. We see many of our clients who in a split second can lose their independence and freedom. Rebuilding lives through rehabilitation and support is so important after sustaining a spinal cord injury.

A Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complex condition which involves damage to the spinal cord and results in full or partial paralysis in either the lower limbs (paraplegia) or all four limbs (tetraplegia). Using the NHS’s own statistics, as well as data from other countries, the 3 main spinal cord Injury charities estimate that the number of people injured or diagnosed with a life-changing spinal cord injury in the UK is 2,500 per year and the total number of people living with a spinal cord injury in the UK is at least 50,000.

How Burnetts Can Help

The MNSI team at Burnetts are the only firm with an office in Cumbria to be accredited by the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA). We are proud to be a Bronze member in recognition of our support of the charity.

If you have sustained a spinal cord injury as a result of a road traffic collision, an accident at work, an accident in a public place, from an assault/attack or from clinical negligence it is important to get legal advice from an experienced solicitor who has experience of spinal cord injury claims. Even when someone is only partly to blame you may still be able to claim.

If you would like to speak to someone within our MNSI team to discuss whether you may have a serious injury or clinical negligence claim then please contact our offices on 01228 552222 or e-mail hello@burnetts.co.uk . Please note that both telephone and video appointments can be arranged during this period of COVID-19 lockdown.

Our separate blog on COVID-19 and the effect on people with Spinal Cord Injuries can be accessed here.
